Sustenance Group members helped plan and initiate CARE’s first National Day of Action in 2007, and spearheaded the activities again this year with dynamo event chair Diana Sturisky and CARE’s Senior Field Director, Derreck Kayongo. On October 17, 2008, more than 200 people gathered at Mason Murer Gallery in Atlanta for an awareness event to commemorate the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. CARE and ONE hosted several wonderful speakers, including CNN’s Sanjay Gupta, Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, former US Secretary of Health, Dr. Louis Sullivan and CARE CEO, Dr. Helene Gayle. Producer Scott Thigpen and Director Tom Capello gave us a glimpse of their film, A Powerful Noise, Brenda Wood from 11 Alive hosted, and music was provided by the amazing Lost Boys of Sudan, Burundi Drummers and The MAXX.
The event was part of a worldwide attempt to break a Guiness Book of Records record for the most people speaking out against poverty at once (nearly 117,000,000).
