Chuck Leavell Honored at Captain Planet Event Featuring Julian Lennon and Collective Soul

The Captain Planet Foundation held its annual Benefit Gala Nov. 16 in Atlanta. The charitable evening recognizes environmental activists and raises funds for the Foundation’s mission to engage and empower young people to be environmental problem-solvers through grant giving and Foundation programs. The event raised more than $750,000.

Chuck Leavell, conservationist, author, Rolling Stones keyboardist and Allman Brothers Band member, received the Superhero for Earth award for his dedication to forest conservation. Richard Louv, journalist, author (“Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder”) and chairman and co-founder of the Children & Nature Network, received the Exemplar award. Brad Bartlett, president of Dole Packaged Foods, received the Corporate Superhero Award. “Green carpet” arrivals also included media mogul and Captain Planet Founder Ted Turner, among others.

Music was a major theme of an evening that included performances by Leavell, Julian Lennon and Collective Soul, joined by Peter Stroud.
